It’s 3 AM.  Again.  And, shit, you have a nine AM.  Also, that professor takes attendance.  You have no choice.  You will have to your drag your sleepy brain to class with the coffee as strong as you can possibly take it.  And then after that, you can’t take a nap because you have something due at midnight. And by something, I mean like three essays, two of which you haven’t started and the other one needs re-writing like you need that goddamn nap.

Sound familiar?

This was the story of my Thursday.  And on that fateful day, I watched a video uploaded by one of my favorite YouTubers.  She was sitting in bad lighting.  She had bags under her eyes.  She’s a college sophomore, just like me.  And all she really had to say was how tired she was.  That was it.  That was the whole video.

And I loved it.  Because I was tired too.  Because I was stressed too.  Because before that, I felt kind of alone in my haze of upcoming assignments and interviews and feeding myself and maintaining my blog.

Usually, when you have an introduction like this, when you have someone that is admitting these things, they’re doing it for the reason of providing a solution.  “Here’s eight great ways to boost your productivity!”  “Here’s how you should schedule your day!”  “Productivity: You’re doing it wrong.”  And those things can be very helpful.  But there’s something else that needs to be said that just isn’t.

It is perfectly okay to have a shit week.  You could know every organizational tip in the universe and you would probably still have weeks where assignments spiral out of control and you fall down the rabbit hole of caffeine and little to no sleep.

When you do, stop by and say hi to me.  I’ll probably be there with my French press.  Come hang out and we’ll drink coffee together and talk about how the bags beneath our eyes are Coach and how sometimes we’re scared that we don’t actually belong in university with all of these productive people.  We’ll talk about how sometimes failure feels like it’s looming over you, and how the other day you were slightly concerned about your caffeine intake because your eyes felt like they were vibrating in their sockets.

And the next time some college lifestyle blogger, (even me, if I manage to find a particularly tall horse) tells you that they have the secret to good grades, sleep, nutrition, extra-curricular activities, and a social life, roll your eyes so far into the back of your head that you can’t see the page anymore.  Because it’s not really worth it if it makes you feel useless, is it?

Yes, do your research.  Yes, try out new tips and tricks to be productive.  Do find what works for you.  Do follow your ambition.  Do try.

But when you’re having trouble holding your head above water, don’t feel alone.  Don’t think that it’s the fault of your planner not being color-coded, or that you’re a personal failure.  Just know that it’s something everyone goes through, and try to get as much sleep as you can.
